What vaccines do I need?

The need for vaccines for foreign travel are quite variable depending upon your destination, your age, your medical history and the vaccines you have received in the past. It is important that you bring your exact itinerary and a record of  vaccines to your office visit at the travel clinic. For a very general list you can go to www.cdc.gov and choose your destination. During your office visit, we will determine your risk for the disease for your particular itinerary and activities to help avoid unnecessary immunizations.

Does my insurance company cover the cost of vaccines?

Some insurance companies do cover the cost of vaccines. However, you will need to contact your insurance company for information specific to your policy. ITM will provide you with a "superbill" that shows CPT, ICD-9 codes as well as all other pertinent information an insurance company may need to process the claim. ITM does not participate in any insurance plans or Medicare and does not file insurance claims. If you are entitled to benefits, the insurance company will reimburse you directly.

How far in advance do I need to come to your office?

For most people we recommend coming to see us 4-6 weeks before travel. If you are planning a long trip (more than 1 month) you should come in preferably 6 months before you leave because you may need vaccines that are given in a series. However, even if you are leaving on your trip tomorrow – it is still worthwhile to come in to see us. We will still be able to give you many of the vaccines that you need. In addition, we provide written country information for your destination, information on other diseases that you may encounter and for which there is no vaccine, advice regarding water, safety issues, malaria protection, protection from insects and many other encounters typical to your destination.

Why are vaccinations so expensive?

Vaccines, like other medicines, have become increasingly expensive over the years and many of them are made by only one company so there may be no competition and companies charge whatever they think they can get. But vaccines save a lot of lives, money (and misery) and, if chosen carefully, are still a good investment in your health. One benefit of a good travel health clinic is getting just exactly the immunizations you need.
